What does it feel like when a machine touches you back?

SOUND/BODY RESONANCE is a two-day inquiry into signal, synchrony, and the body as instrument. This event series is an official part of Berlin New Media Week, and made possible with the support of The NODE Institute.

It begins with a question most of us have never had reason to ask: what happens when the electrical activity of your own brain becomes something you can hear? On Sept 4th, NYU researcher and Fulbright fellow Jason J. Snell leads a hands-on workshop in audiovisual neurofeedback, exploring how to translate real-time EEG brainwave data into music and generative visuals.

That same question carries into an evening program with a roundtable discussion and live performances by Jason J. Snell, KĀ, SENAIDA, and Zap Bain. SOUND/BODY RESONANCE, presented at Atemporal, is an event that invites community members to explore this key question further. Beginning with an intimate, participatory roundtable where artists and researchers present works-in-progress on human-technology entanglement, this session will bridge the gap between research and artistic work, to foster new collaborations and ideas. The discussion will be followed by live EEG-music performances, Light-Body Activations by Ground Tactics, and a ritual gong soundbath. Throughout the night, there will be visual installations, constructing a shared sensory field that invites the audience not merely to witness, but to dissolve into a collective frequency.

Together, the workshop and the evening form a single arc — from the individual signal to the collective one. You start by learning how one brain's activity can become sound. You end in a room where many bodies, tuned by gong and breath and sub-bass, move toward the same frequency at once.

The event draws on Sinofuturist aesthetics and Xenofeminist theory to challenge Western-centric, extractive models of both science and technology — asking not just what these tools can do, but who they're built for, and what other relationships with them might be possible. It asks: what frequencies pre-exist language? And how might synchrony — biological, sonic, social — become a practice of radical intimacy?

THE PROGRAM

1 // Exploring Audiovisual Neurofeedback Workshop with Jason J. Snell Friday, Sept 4th, 15:00–17:00 The NODE Institute, Wipperstraße 13, Berlin

How can signals from the brain become material for sound and visual expression? This lecture-and-hands-on workshop marks the beginning of Jason J. Snell's Fulbright research fellowship in Berlin, and opens up a creative practice at the intersection of neuroscience, music, generative art, and human-computer interaction.

Snell will present the artistic and research context behind his work translating real-time brain activity into responsive musical and visual environments, followed by a practical session in which participants experiment with neurofeedback systems themselves. Six Muse EEG headsets will be available to use individually or in small groups, alongside an open-source, browser-based version of Snell's musical neurofeedback software — participants will learn how brainwave data can be translated into MIDI and routed into creative tools for sound and visualization, including TouchDesigner templates built with collaborating artists for real-time generative visuals.

No prior experience with neuroscience or neurotechnology is required, though familiarity with digital music or visual tools may be helpful.

2 // Roundtable Discussion & Immersive Live Performances Sunday, Sept 6th, 17:00-21:00 Atemporal, Boxhagener Str. 96, Berlin

An intimate, roundtable discussion: an open dialogue circle in which artists, neuroscientists, and researchers share works-in-progress and ideas on the theme of human-technology entanglement.

Following the discussion, a curated program of artistic work sitting at the intersection of electronic music, generative visuals, and speculative technology, featuring live EEG-music performances from Jason J. Snell and Zap Bain, a sub-bass meditation from SENAIDA, and a gong soundbath from KĀ. Together these construct a shared sensory field, inviting the audience not merely to witness but to dissolve into a collective frequency.

THE ARTISTS

Jason J. Snell is a biofeedback artist and electronic musician whose work explores vulnerability, entrainment, and transcendent mental states, combining three decades of experience across computer programming, electronic music production, and meditation practice. He is currently in Berlin as an NYU researcher and Fulbright fellow. With SENAIDA, he co-authored "Cyborg Synchrony: Integrating Human Physiology into Affective Generative Music AI" (Frontiers in Computer Science, 2025), proposing a system that uses real-time physiological data — EEG, ECG, GSR, motion — to generate music that promotes physiological synchrony, and therefore social bonding, between users. SOUND/BODY RESONANCE is, in part, that research made audible and shared with a room.

SENAIDA is a Hakka Chinese-Canadian transdisciplinary artist, sound healer, researcher and curator, whose work embodies a profound exploration of the intersections between shamanism, posthumanism, generative art, interaction design, and sustainability. As a sound architect, SENAIDA crafts liminal collective experiences that challenge and redefine the boundaries of sound art and technology. Their work has been featured in Berlin Art Week, LA Art Show, CTM Festival, Cannes Next Film Festival, NYC Media Lab, Abbey Road Red, NAMM, New Visions for Music & Sound, & MANIFEST:IO.

Zap Bain is an interdisciplinary sound artist and researcher working at the intersection of auditory neurofeedback, spatial audio engineering, and embodied cognition. Their practice develops real-time systems in which brainwave activity and spatial sound form a closed feedback loop, internal brain states made audible as external spatial environments. Their work challenges the current trajectory of technology to give people a new embodied experience, proposing agency and connection over disembodiment.

KĀ (Storm Hartley) is an interdisciplinary healing arts facilitator, guiding rituals between sonic meditation, sensory infusions and movement alchemy.

Cyborg synchrony: integrating human physiology into affective generative music AI

// Abstract // As artificial intelligence (AI) systems become increasingly integrated into human social environments, their ability to foster meaningful interaction remains an open challenge. Building on research showing that physiological synchrony relates to social bonding, we speculate about an interpersonal musical biofeedback system that promotes synchrony by allowing users to attune to each other’s physiological rhythms.

Sonic Ritual at Kwia Berlin with SENAIDA and Storm Hartley

We created a 6-hour sonic ritual, using live instruments, DJ ambient music, and a series of joint-brainwave compositions, using meditative alpha waves from 6 audiences members at a time. A large, audio-responsive LED sculpture on the wall reacted to the sounds in real-time. We held several brainwave sessions, inviting different audience members each time to attempt to trigger notes with their brains by moving into a meditative state, thereby increasing the amplitude of their alpha brainwaves. The live instruments included a gong, singing bowl, and chimes. The DJ ambient tracks in this video include "Presence Practice" by DJ Gigola.
